UBAY MURILLO
The Fundación Canaria para el Desarrollo de la Pintura (FCDP) presents the exhibition Your body is my body, the first solo exhibition of the artist Ubay Murillo, (Tenerife, 1978), in the province of Las Palmas.
The artist’s work on display at the Foundation is a journey through his artistic practices and shows his relationship with painting, understood both as a representation and as an object. The room also presents an installation of expanded painting in which architectural elements such as the floor and walls are intervened. Upon entering the Foundation (FCDP), the viewer sees a series of works in which abstraction plays an essential role in configuring the elements in space.
Ubay also uses the arrangement of the elements to draw attention to the concomitances between the commercial display, that is, the shop window, and the artistic display. Despite the air of avant-garde that can be sensed in most of the works, it is not about referencing these movements; rather, it is about understanding the way in which they have been digested as styles and have occupied a position in our imaginary. The artist investigates how the avant-garde went from a supposed fusion of art and life to a school that mutated, over time, from mass production to exclusivity and refined consumption.
