James English Leary nació en Chicago en el año 1982 y estudió Bellas Artes en la Cooper Union University. Desde entonces vive y trabaja en New York, ciudad donde fundó junto a un grupo de artistas, comisarios e ideólogos del arte The Bruce High Quality Foundation (BHQF) —grupo creado en Brooklyn en el año 2001 y que abandonó en el año 2014—, un colectivo que planteó a inicios del nuevo milenio si tenía sentido cuestionarse nuevamente la muerte del sujeto posmoderno para regresar una vez más a las enseñanzas de la posmodernidad incompleta de Lyotard, reivindicando investigar en la autoría como arcaico sistema de poder.
Tras más de una década participando en los transgresores, participativos e irreverentes site specifics, performances e instalaciones de BHGF, James toma distancia del colectivo para comenzar una nueva etapa creativa en la que se centra en el ejercicio de la pintura con una obra que se adentra en los límites de lo abstracto y lo figurativo a partir de los usos de lo caligráfico y lo escritural, y donde lo caricaturesco es hilvanado con el gigantismo de la época contemporánea donde el acercamiento focal del macro redimensiona las nociones de la realidad, si esta es observada con sentido del humor y ningún dramatismo.
Desde esta juguetona actitud, James English Leary ha logrado reabrir una brecha en el panorama internacional en un contexto donde su singularidad especulativa de lo carnal, lo infantil contrasta con la sobriedad de una propuesta pictórica que emula a Frank Stella, James Rosenquist, al más voluptuoso Kenny Scharf o lo más carnavalesco de su gran amigo Ray Smith, para sintetizarlos en un camino propio, burlón, jocoso y desenfadado, dotado de una atractiva inteligencia y una agudeza misteriosa.
The Bruce High Quality Foundation es un grupo abierto donde se han involucrado inicialmente menos de media docena de artistas y han llegado a integrarlo cerca de una veintena, aglutinándose en torno a su núcleo central, del que James English Leary formó parte, artistas, cineastas, escritores, comisarios, estudiantes de arte y arquitectura o diseño, así como operarios de trabajo mucho más técnicos, infográficos o artesanales.

James English Leary (Chicago, 1982) studied Fine Art at Cooper Union University. He lives and works in New York, where he set up The Bruce High Quality Foundation (BHQF) in Brooklyn in 2001, together with a group of artists, curators and art thinkers. At the beginning of the new millennium, the collective wondered whether there was any sense in continuing to question the death of the postmodern subject or to return yet again to Lyotard’s teachings on unfinished postmodernism, exploring the idea of authorship as an archaic power system. He left the collective in 2014 after more than a decade taking part in BHQF’s transgressive, participative and irreverent performances, installations and site-specific projects.
James wished to take some distance from the collective and set out on a new creative phase in which he was to focus on painting. Engaging with the limits of the abstract and the figurative, and grounded in the use of calligraphy and writing, his work fuses caricature with the gigantism of the contemporary era where a focal approach to the macro resizes our notions of reality, if one contemplates it with a sense of humour and zero dramatics.
From this playful attitude, James English Leary has managed to breach an opening once again in the international art scene in a context in which his singular exploration of the carnal and the infantile contrasts with the sobriety of a painterly project that emulates Frank Stella, James Rosenquist, or the more voluptuous version of Kenny Scharf and the most carnivalesque aspect of his dear friend Ray Smith, synthesising them all in his own mocking, playful, light-hearted way, undergirded by alluring intelligence and mysterious insight.
The Bruce High Quality Foundation is an open group initially made up of a handful of artists but eventually encompassing a score or so, revolving around a core including James English Leary. Members of the collective are artists, filmmakers, writers and curators as well as art, design and architecture students, plus much more technical, infographic and artisanal art workers.
